STAND UP AND SING FOR AMERICA!

.FLAG DAY: JUNE 14, 2018

LET'S ALL "STAND TOGETHER" IN OUR VARIOUS LOCATIONS AND SING OUR HEART'S LOVE TO OUR FLAG AND OUR NATION (AND THE FREEDOM FOR ALL MANKIND THAT OUR FLAG REPRESENTS).

OUR WISH FOR YOU IS THAT YOU WILL MAKE THIS OCCASION A PRIORITY AND TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO DO THE SAME.

THIS IS GOING TO BE A GOOD DAY FOR FREEDOM AND THE BROTHERHOOD OF MANKIND.

PREPARE YE TO SING!
WE ASK THE QUESTION:  DO YOU READ ONLY ONE CHAPTER OF A BOOK TO FIND OUT ITS MESSAGE AND RECEIVE ITS GIFTS?  NAY! THEN, WHY DO WE SING ONLY ONE VERSE OF OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM?  THERE IS POWER!  HEALING! STRENGTH! AND RENEWAL IN ITS VERSES.  CHANGE YOUR WAYS!  FIND OUT WHAT THIS SONG HAS TO GIVE TO YOU AND TO OUR NATION.

THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER

Oh! say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming.
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
Oh say does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

On the shore, dimly seen thro' the mist of the deep
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep.
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses.
Now it catches the gleam, of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream!
'Tis the Star-Spangled Banner, oh long may it wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand,
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation,
Blest with victory and peace, may the Heaven - rescued land,
Praise the Power that Hath Made and Preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, for our cause is just,
And this be our motto --"In God is our trust."
And the Star-Spangled Banner, in triumph does wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Melody by John Stafford Smith

THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
SURELY YOU KNOW THE STORY BEHIND OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM.  WE'D LIKE TO MAKE SURE YOU DO!

THE PERSONAL STORIES OF THOSE WHOSE COURAGE AND LOVE FOR THEIR COUNTRY BECAME DEFINING MOMENTS IN OUR NATION'S DESTINY.
THE TIME IS 1814 AND THE BRITISH MEAN TO TAKE BACK AMERICA.  HAVING ENTERED WASHINGTON D.C. WITHOUT RESISTANCE, THEY BURNED NEARLY ALL THE GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS TO THE GROUND, INCLUDING THE WHITE HOUSE AND ARE NOW PLANNING TO TAKE BALTIMORE AS A BRITISH STRONG-HOLD.
FRANCIS SCOTT KEY, A YOUNG LAWYER, GOES ON A MISSION TO NEGOTIATE THE RELEASE OF AN ELDERLY AND MUCH-LOVED PATRIOT PHYSICIAN, DR. WILLIAM BEANE, WHO THE BRITISH HAVE TAKEN HOSTAGE ON ONE OF THEIR SHIPS.  IT'S AN ODD STORY REALLY, BECAUSE IN THE MIDST OF ALL THE WAR PLANS, THEY AGREE TO RELEASE DR. BEANE, BUT WILL NOT LET KEY, BEANE OR THE GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL WITH THEM, LEAVE UNTIL AFTER THEY CARRY OUT THEIR PLANS TO DESTROY FT. MCHENRY AND TAKE BALTIMORE.
IN ANGUISH, KEY AND THE TWO MEN ARE PUT ON BOARD A SHIP UNDER GUARD AND SPEND MANY DAYS ANTICIPATING THE DREADED ACTION AGAINST AMERICA, NOT KNOWING WHEN IT WILL BEGIN NOR THE OUTCOME.  THE BOMBARDMENT OF FT. MCHENRY BEGINS AND IS RELENTLESS IN SOUND AND APPEARANCE.  KEY, BEANE AND AGENT ARE HELPLESS IN THE FACE OF IT.  SOME 26 HOURS LATER, THERE IS SILENCE.  AS THE MIST OF DAWN'S EARLY LIGHT AND THE SMOKE FROM THE INCESSANT BOMBING CLEARS, KEY LOOKS TO SEE IF THE AMERICAN FLAG IS STILL FLYING.
LO AND BEHOLD, IT IS SO!  THE EMOTIONS OF THE MOMENT, THE RELIEF FROM ANGUISH, THE LOVE FOR HIS COUNTRY, CAUSED KEY TO WRITE THE FIRST VERSE OF A POEM - TO WHICH HE LATER WAS ADDED THREE MORE VERSES.  THIS INSPIRATION CAME TO BE PUT WITH THE MELODY WHICH WE NOW KNOW AS OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM.
NOW THERE'S MORE TO IT THAN THAT.  THERE'S THE BRAVE COMMANDER OF FT. MCHENRY, MAJOR GEORGE ARMISTEAD, WHO ORDERED A "FLAG SO BIG, THE BRITISH COULD SEE IT FROM A GREAT DISTANCE." THERE'S THE SINGLE MOTHER AND FLAG-MAKER, MARY PICKERSGILL, WHO HAND-SEWED MORE THAN 1.7 MILLION STITCHES TO MAKE THE BIG FLAG AND A SMALLER ONE.   THERE ARE SO MANY AMAZING STORIES OF BRAVE AMERICAN CITIZENS THAT WHEN WOVEN TOGETHER, BRING US AN UNFORGETTABLE STORY FOR THE CAUSE OF LIBERTY.
AND IF YOU'VE READ THIS FAR, PLEASE NOTE:
FRANCIS SCOTT KEY, AT THE TIME THESE EVENTS TOOK PLACE, WAS A HERO AMONG THE BLACK POPULATION, ESPECIALLY THE SLAVES.  MANY APPROACHED HIM TO ASK FOR HIS HELP AND HE WOULD -- WITHOUT ANY CHARGE TO THEM - REPRESENT THEM IN COURT AND PETITION THE COURT FOR THEIR FREEDOM.  WHEN IT CAME TO FIGHTING IN THIS WAR, THE BRITISH MADE HEAVY APPEALS TO SLAVES, OFFERING THEM THEIR FREEDOM IF THEY WOULD COME AND FIGHT ON THE BRITISH SIDE AGAINST AMERICA.  MANY, MANY TURNED TAIL AND DID THIS.  ONE FELLOW, A SLAVED NAMED FREDERICK, RAN AWAY FROM HIS MASTER BENJAMIN ODEN AND HEADED FOR BALTIMORE, WHERE HE SIGNED UP FOR THE 38TH INFANTRY UNIT, AN EXCLUSIVELY WHITE DIVISION OF THE U.S. ARMY.  HE SIGNED IN AS "WILLIAM WILLIAM" AND SERVED AMERICA UNTIL HIS LEG WAS BLOWN OFF DURING THE BOMBARDMENT OF FT. MCHENRY.  HE LATER PERISHED, AS A HERO OF THE TIME.
